CHAPTER 14:
The Fighting Preacher VS the Gulf AAU

"This proved to be an eye opening experience for Ray, and like his mentor he did not like what he was seeing. It seemed that racism was everywhere he turned in his life and now it was showing up in the world that he so passionately loved. He had always thought that racism was not just unfair, but stupid, it kept the best people from giving their best for others to enjoy. This could not be what God wanted for the world; He meant for all of His children to get along and not treat one as being better than the other. Ray also knew that sooner or later he would have to do more than just talk about the wrongs of society, but that he would be called upon to make a difference in the way that things were being done; he had been preparing himself for that moment, and now he knew that at last, it had finally arrived in the form of the Gulf AAU.

Ray was somewhat different than the other fighters who had come before him, he knew that something had to be done and that it was his responsibility to do it. He would not wait on others to speak up, this injustice was directed at him and he would respond. No matter what the outcome of St. Louis, Ray Martin already knew that he had a special mission when he returned to Houston. He knew that the Gulf AAU was not operating honestly and openly with the people of the boxing community and that he was making it his mission to expose them as being the racist organization that they truly were. He didn't know how he would go about it, or who to contact, he just knew that he was going to take them on and he was determined to make them change their ways" (From the forth coming book, by Paris Eley, The Fighting Preacher)
